May 11, (THEWILL)- Burnley’s relegation from the English Premier League was confirmed after a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, on Saturday. Vincent Kompany’s side knew only a win would keep their slim survival hopes alive, but Pedro Porro’s wonder strike and Micky van de Ven’s late goal condemned the Clarets to the Championship.
The visitors made a blistering start and took the lead through Jacob Bruun Larsen’s cool finish. However, Porro’s thunderbolt drew Spurs level before the break. Burnley went agonisingly close to regaining the advantage, but Maxime Estève’s header crashed against the bar.
Despite weathering sustained Spurs pressure, Burnley remained in the contest until the dying stages. But their hearts were broken when Van de Ven stroked home from the edge of the box to seal a 2-1 win for the hosts and Burnley’s place in the second tier next term.
The defeat leaves Kompany’s men six points adrift of safety with just two games remaining. While their EPL status will end, Burnley emerged with great credit from this campaign and can be proud of their top-flight efforts.
