October 15, (THEWILL) – The Muri Munene and Grand Patriarch of the Efut, His Royal Majesty, Maurice Okon Eyo 1, has reminded the President of his promise of dredging the Calabar Port to facilitate trade in the state.
President Tinubu, during a stakeholder meeting with his party ahead of the primaries in Calabar, promised to dredge the Calabar Port.
Re-echoing the president’s promise, the Calabar Monarch noted that the state kept faith with the party during the last general elections and it is now the turn of the president to reciprocate the gesture by keeping to that promise as a promise keeper.
The monarch decried the state of the port stating that business and traffic activities have been low as investors and shipping lines were not patronising it in spite of the sophisticated equipment available.
“Though several attempts had in the past been made to dredge the Calabar Channel leading up to the port, nothing concrete was done.
“There is no proper access to Calabar Port and people doing flour, cement and other relevant businesses need access from both seasides and hinterland.
“People here are just starving out of plenty.
“So we are appealing to the president to facilitate the dredging of the port because we must use it to feed ourselves.
“The dredging will even relieve Akwa Ibom state, Chad, Cameroon and other northern states”, he said.
He also lauded the Cross River State governor, Senator Bassey Otu, for reinvigorating the state security architecture which has drastically reduced the cases of kidnapping and other sundry criminal activities in the state.
