January 06, (THEWILL) – Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has announced his resignation amid growing dissent within his Liberal Party.

Trudeau, who became Liberal leader in 2013 and prime minister in the fall of 2015, announced his long-awaited decision outside his official residence, Rideau Cottage, on Monday, adding that the decision would take effect once the Liberal Party has chosen a successor.

“We are at a critical moment in the world. I am a fighter. I care deeply about Canadians, I will always be motivated by what’s best for Canadians. Over the holidays I have had long talks with my family to reflect on our future… Last night I told my kids about the decision that I am sharing with you. I resign as prime minister until the Liberals elect a new leader”, he said.

Trudeau also said he asked Governor General Mary Simon to prorogue Parliament until March 24, and she granted the request.

“This morning, I advised the Governor General that we need a new session of parliament. She has granted this request and the House will now be prorogued until March 24″, he said.

Trudeau’s administration has grown more unpopular in recent months, narrowly surviving a series of no-confidence votes as critics led by the Conservative Party call for its resignation.

The pressure on Trudeau has worsened since incoming US president Donald Trump threatened a 25-percent tariff on Canadian goods.

Deputy Prime Minister, Chrystia Freeland, resigned in December following a clash with Trudeau on the appropriate response to Trump’s plan.

Trudeau subsequently shook up his cabinet, firing one-third of his team in a bid to manage the political fallout.
