June 27 (THEWILL) — Cape Verde continued their remarkable FIFA World Cup debut by reaching the knockout stage for the first time in the nation’s history after battling to a 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia in their final Group H fixture at NRG Stadium in Houston.
The Blue Sharks needed only a point to keep their hopes alive and produced another disciplined display to secure second place in the group.
The historic qualification was confirmed after Uruguay fell to Spain in the group’s other fixture.
Although the match failed to produce a goal, Cape Verde were the more adventurous side, finishing with 51 per cent possession and 15 shots, compared to Saudi Arabia’s six.
However, neither attack could find a breakthrough as both goalkeepers delivered assured performances.
Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohammed Alowais denied Cape Verde on several occasions, while veteran goalkeeper Vozinha once again proved dependable between the posts, making three saves to preserve another clean sheet after his heroics earlier in the tournament.
Saudi Arabia struggled to establish any attacking rhythm, with Salem Al-Dawsari and Feras Albrikan well contained by Cape Verde’s organised defence.
Frustration crept into the Saudi performance as they accumulated three yellow cards, including one inside the opening four minutes.
For Cape Verde, the final whistle marked the greatest achievement in the country’s football history as the tournament debutants advanced to the Round of 32, extending a memorable World Cup campaign that has captured global attention.
