November 14, (THEWILL) – The Borno State Government has commended the Centre for Advocacy Transparency and Accountability Initiative and its partners for their significant support to 3,000 households affected by the recent flood disaster in Maiduguri.
Chairman of the State Flood Relief Disbursement Committee, Baba Gujubawu, expressed the government’s gratitude during the distribution of relief items in Maiduguri.
Gujubawu, represented by, the Zonal Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency for Borno and Yobe States, Surajo Garba, acknowledged the efforts of CATAI, Oxfam, and the Dutch Relief Alliance in extending assistance to flood victims.
“On behalf of the committee, we appreciate the generosity of CATAI, Oxfam, and DRA.
“Their support will reach over 3,000 women identified as being among those most affected,” Garba said.
Garba highlighted that Nigeria remains a nation of compassionate people, with countless individuals, corporate organizations, and NGOs rallying to help during this crisis.
“The committee has received overwhelming support from donors, good-hearted Nigerians, and corporate bodies,” he added.
Sadiq Abubakar, Executive Director of CATAI, noted that the scale of the flood’s devastation in Maiduguri and nearby communities was too severe to be handled by the government alone.
This prompted CATAI, Oxfam, and DRA to join efforts with the Borno State Flood Response Committee to reach out to approximately 5,000 flood victims across the Borno and Yobe States.
“We have provided essential non-food items to victims in Old Maiduguri and Dalori.
“Our response includes special support for people living with disabilities and women who head households,” Abubakar explained.
The relief items, which included cooking pots, solar lamps, wrappers, mats, cups, blankets, and mosquito nets, were distributed to help affected families meet their immediate needs.
Over 2,000 households in Taumusuri and Tamsukumdu Wards, in Falatari and Yusufari communities in Yobe State, received multipurpose cash assistance.
Abubakar extended his appreciation to the Dutch Relief Alliance and Oxfam for their invaluable support in this humanitarian intervention.
The collaborative relief efforts are expected to provide meaningful assistance to flood victims and help them begin to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of the disaster.
