Dollar-to-Naira-black-market-Today

January 23, (THEWILL) — The United States dollar softened against major global currencies on Monday as investors adopted a cautious stance ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve’s next policy meeting, while Nigeria’s naira continued to experience volatility across currency markets.

In global markets, the dollar index edged lower as traders weighed signals that the Federal Reserve may maintain a restrictive stance for longer amid sticky inflation and resilient labour market data.

The uncertainty has slowed dollar demand, with investors reluctant to take strong positions until clearer guidance emerges from the Fed on interest rate direction and the timing of any potential rate cuts.

Locally, the naira remained unstable, reflecting persistent pressure from structural FX supply constraints and elevated demand.

At the official market, the currency traded within a narrow but fragile range, while at the unofficial market, the naira fluctuated as demand from importers and speculative activity continued to outpace available dollar supply.

Analysts note that despite recent policy efforts by the Central Bank of Nigeria to improve liquidity and transparency in the foreign exchange market, confidence remains sensitive to external developments, particularly U.S. monetary policy and global capital flows.

A weaker dollar could offer temporary relief for emerging and frontier currencies, including the naira, but domestic fundamentals remain the dominant driver.

Going forward, market participants expect currency movements to remain choppy in the near term, with attention firmly fixed on the Federal Reserve’s policy signals and their implications for global risk appetite and capital flows into Nigeria
