August 01, (THEWILL) — Chelsea have confirmed the signing of veteran striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion, with the former England international putting pen to paper on a two-year contract at Stamford Bridge.
Although the clubs have not disclosed the financial details of the transfer, the move marks another addition to Xabi Alonso’s squad as Chelsea continue preparations for the new Premier League campaign.
Welbeck joins the Blues on the back of an impressive season in which he scored a career-best 13 Premier League goals in 37 appearances. Among English players, only three found the net more often in the league last season, underlining the striker’s enduring quality despite being 35 years old.
Speaking after completing the transfer, Welbeck expressed his excitement about joining the London club.
“When you hear of Chelsea’s interest, it’s something that fills you with immense pride,” he said.
“I already know a few of the players and have had some excellent conversations with the manager. From those discussions, I immediately felt a connection.
“I still have the hunger and desire to compete, and I’m ready to give everything to help this club achieve success and make the supporters proud.”
Welbeck becomes Chelsea’s third signing of the summer transfer window, following the arrivals of Morgan Rogers and Marco Palestra. His arrival, however, represents a noticeable shift in the club’s recent recruitment policy.
Since the current ownership took charge in 2022, Chelsea have largely focused on signing young players with long-term potential. Welbeck, with more than a decade of Premier League experience, brings leadership and maturity to one of the youngest squads in English football.
The experienced forward also adds further competition to Chelsea’s attacking department, where Joao Pedro is expected to lead the line alongside fellow forwards Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Marc Guiu and Nicolas Jackson.
Welbeck’s career has taken him through some of England’s biggest clubs. He came through Manchester United’s academy before joining Arsenal in 2014, where he spent five seasons. After a brief spell at Watford, he moved to Brighton in 2020 and became an important figure for the Seagulls both on and off the pitch.
He has also represented England 42 times, scoring 16 international goals, although he missed out on selection for the country’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.
Chelsea’s decision to recruit Welbeck appears to be based on more than experience alone. His intelligent movement, ability to stretch defensive lines and willingness to link play have remained key strengths throughout his career. Last season he consistently converted chances at an efficient rate while also creating opportunities for teammates, qualities Alonso believes can complement Chelsea’s dynamic frontline.
The move signals Chelsea’s intention to blend youthful talent with proven experience as they look to challenge for major honours in the seasons ahead, with Welbeck now hoping to write another successful chapter in an already distinguished Premier League career.
