August 03, (THEWILL) — Chelsea have officially completed the signing of veteran England midfielder Jordan Henderson on a free transfer, with the former Liverpool captain agreeing a two-year contract at Stamford Bridge.
The 36-year-old arrives after terminating his contract with Brentford by mutual consent, becoming one of the most unexpected transfers of the summer as Chelsea continue to reshape their squad under new manager Xabi Alonso.
Henderson’s arrival follows the signing of 35-year-old striker Danny Welbeck, highlighting a dramatic shift in Chelsea’s transfer strategy after several years of focusing almost exclusively on younger players.
Speaking after completing the move, Henderson admitted the opportunity to join Chelsea was simply too big to ignore.
“Given the size of the club, the manager, who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” Henderson said.
“I was also so impressed with how much the ownership want Chelsea to be successful and move in the right direction.
“For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going.”
Chelsea’s decision to recruit experienced professionals marks a significant departure from their recent transfer policy. The club had not featured a player over the age of 30 in two years and had not paid for an older player in four years before this summer.
However, Alonso is believed to have pushed strongly for the addition of seasoned leaders capable of raising standards inside the dressing room after Chelsea’s disappointing collapse during the closing stages of last season.
The Spaniard is drawing from his successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen, where he transformed one of the Bundesliga’s youngest squads into unbeaten league and cup champions by introducing experienced figures such as Granit Xhaka and Jonas Hofmann.
Chelsea believe Henderson’s leadership, professionalism and winning mentality will provide valuable guidance to a squad filled with talented young players.
The experienced midfielder boasts an impressive résumé, having won the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup during his trophy-laden spell at Liverpool. He has also earned over 80 caps for England and captained both club and country.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are also close to completing another piece of transfer business, with academy graduate Trevoh Chalobah set to join Italian side Como.
The Serie A club have agreed a deal worth an initial £25.7 million, with a further £5.1 million in performance-related add-ons. Chalobah has reportedly agreed personal terms, and the transfer is expected to be finalised once the remaining formalities are completed.
For Chelsea, Henderson’s arrival represents more than just another signing. It signals the beginning of a new era under Alonso, one built not only on youthful potential but also on proven leadership and experience, qualities the club believes are essential in its pursuit of major honours once again.
