July 4 (THEWILL) — Ghana’s hopes of reaching the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 were dashed on Saturday, as Colombia secured a narrow 1-0 victory in Kansas City, ending the Black Stars’ impressive campaign and reducing Africa’s representation in the knockout stages.
An early goal from Jhon Arias proved decisive as the South Americans held off a determined Ghanaian side to book their place in the next round, where they will face Switzerland.
Colombia struck in the 14th minute when Arias latched onto a well-delivered cross from Luis Javier Suárez and guided his effort past goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi.
The goal came shortly after an injury-enforced substitution for Colombia following the withdrawal of striker Jhon Córdoba, but the setback did little to disrupt their rhythm.

Despite their efforts, Otto Addo’s men were unable to find the breakthrough that would have forced extra time, bringing an end to a campaign that rekindled memories of Ghana’s memorable World Cup runs of the past.
For Colombia, the victory extends an unbeaten run that has seen them emerge as one of the tournament’s most consistent teams. Los Cafeteros now turn their attention to a Round of 16 clash against Switzerland as they continue their pursuit of a maiden World Cup title.
While the defeat was a bitter one for Ghana, the Black Stars leave the tournament with their reputation enhanced after returning to the knockout stage for the first time since 2010 and once again demonstrating Africa’s ability to compete with the world’s elite nations.
