July 13, (THEWILL) — The Commissioner for Works in Ebonyi State, Engr. Stanley Lebechi Mbam, has issued a strong warning to residents and communities across the state to desist from constructing illegal speed breakers on rural roads, describing the practice as unlawful and detrimental to public infrastructure.
Speaking to journalists on Saturday in Abakaliki, Engr. Mbam condemned the unauthorised erection of speed bumps, emphasising that individuals have no right to alter road structures without the express approval of the state government, through the Ministry of Works.
“Illegal speed breakers on our rural roads are unacceptable. They damage our road infrastructure and pose serious dangers to both humans and their properties”, he said.
He explained that many roads constructed by the state government do not require speed breakers, and indiscriminate construction of such obstacles could lead to early deterioration and erosion of the roads.
“If any community believes speed breakers are necessary, they must first apply to the Ministry of Works. We will inspect the area, determine if it’s truly needed, and then decide the appropriate type before granting approval”, the Commissioner added.
He also called on residents to take responsibility for their immediate environment by regularly cleaning the drainage around their homes and communities.
According to him, clogged water channels often lead to erosion, which compromises the integrity of road surfaces and public health.
Mbam stated that the Ministry of Works is currently executing a number of critical projects across Ebonyi State, many of which have been completed and are awaiting formal commissioning.
“In fact, if we were to begin commissioning all completed projects, especially roads, we would be doing that every day.
“Ironically, the money used for commissioning ceremonies is sometimes more than what is spent on the actual project execution”, he noted.
Highlighting his commitment to humanitarian efforts, especially on youth empowerment and giving succour to the indigents, the Commissioner reaffirmed his continued support to the people through his charitable foundation.
He disclosed that several health-related interventions have been carried out, including settling medical bills and facilitating surgical procedures for indigent patients.
“Just yesterday, four people received free surgical operations through our foundation. We remain committed to uplifting lives through targeted interventions”, he said.
Mbam assured the public that Governor Francis Nwifuru’s administration is focused on completing numerous developmental projects before the end of its first tenure, promising improved infrastructure and sustained support for rural communities.
