November 10, (THEWILL) — Officials of the Community Protection Guard (CPG) in Zamfara State have intercepted a vehicle conveying sophisticated weapons allegedly meant for armed bandits operating in the area.
A member of the CPG, Salisu Adamu, said the discovery was made during a routine stop-and-search operation in the Dangulbi community.
He explained that operatives recovered two AK-47 rifles, a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG), and several rounds of ammunition concealed inside a carton packed with smoked fish.
Adamu said the interception followed the guards’ insistence on thoroughly searching the commercial vehicle despite attempts to discourage them.
“The weapons were hidden inside a fish carton. When we insisted on carrying out a proper search, the driver initially resisted, which raised suspicion. Upon closer inspection, we uncovered the arms and ammunition,” he said.
The driver, identified as Bashar Mustapha, claimed he was transporting passengers and goods from Gusau Motor Park to Magami.
He insisted he was unaware of the hidden weapons, stating that the items belonged to a female passenger who boarded in Gusau and fled before the search was completed.
Security sources confirmed that the suspect and the seized weapons have been handed over to the authorities for further investigation.
Efforts are underway to track down the female passenger believed to be connected to the arms.
The incident has heightened concern over the continued movement of illegal weapons into Zamfara and other North-West states, despite ongoing military operations targeting bandit groups.
A senior CPG commander, reacting to the interception, commended his operatives and urged residents to remain vigilant.
“This success shows what community cooperation and alertness can achieve. We remain committed to ensuring Zamfara becomes safe again,” he said.
