December 09, (THEWILL) — President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the approval of the National Assembly to deploy Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin following Sunday’s failed coup attempt in Cotonou.
The request was contained in a letter read during plenary on Tuesday by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Tinubu, citing Section 5(5) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), said the deployment request followed a formal appeal from the Beninese government and aligns with the longstanding ties of cooperation, friendship and brotherhood between both nations.
“This deployment is imperative to support peacekeeping efforts in a sister country,” the President stated in the letter.
The development comes after soldiers under the self-styled “Military Committee for Refoundation,” led by Lt. Col. Pascal Tigri, briefly seized the state television station in Cotonou and announced the overthrow of President Patrice Talon.
The attempted coup was quickly suppressed by the Beninese Armed Forces with support from ECOWAS Joint Multinational Forces.
