January 09, (THEWILL) — The National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), Abuja, has issued an interim order restraining the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) from embarking on its planned industrial action scheduled to commence on Monday, January 12, 2026.
Justice Emmanuel Subilim granted the interim order on Friday, barring all members and agents of NARD from calling, directing, organising, participating in, or embarking upon any form of industrial action.
The order covers strikes, work stoppages, go-slows, picketing, or any other form of industrial protest or disruption, as well as any steps preparatory to such actions.
According to the court, “The order shall remain in force pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice fixed for the 21st day of January, 2026.”
The suit was instituted by the Attorney General of the Federation and the Federal Government of Nigeria against the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, its President, Dr Mohammed Suleiman, and Dr Shuaibu Ibrahim.
NARD had earlier threatened to commence a nationwide strike on January 12, citing unresolved demands.
The National President of the association, Dr Mohammad Usman Suleiman, had said the withdrawal of services from midnight on Monday is a response to “unmet commitments, shifting government positions and worsening working conditions for resident doctors.”
He stated that the suspension of the strike would only be considered after the full implementation of what he described as its minimum demands, including the reinstatement of the five resident doctors disengaged from the Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja, and the payment of outstanding promotion and salary arrears, among others.
