April 16, (THEWILL) – The Lagos High Court, sitting in Ikeja, has declared Mudashiru Obasa’s impeachment as Speaker of the State Assembly illegal and unconstitutional.
The Lagos State House of Assembly had, on January 13, impeached Obasa and elected Meranda as the new Assembly Speaker. Dissatisfied with the process, Obasa had, in an application dated February 12, and filed before the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja, sued the State Government, the House of Assembly and Meranda to challenge the legitimacy of his removal, insisting due process was not followed.
Ruling on Wednesday, Justice Yetunde Adesanya voided all proceedings and resolutions of the Assembly held on January 13, 2025, during which Obasa was ousted as Speaker.
Justice Adesanya held that due process was not followed in the impeachment, declaring all actions taken during the session invalid.
The court awarded N500,000 as damages in favour of Obasa.
THEWILL recalled that Obasa returned as Speaker of the Lagos Assembly on March 3, 2025, following intervention by President Bola Tinubu and leaders of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC).
