June 22 (THEWILL) — The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court on Monday ordered the remand of activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his application challenging the revocation of his bail.
Justice Mohammed Umar directed that Sowore remain in custody until June 24, when the court will hear the motion seeking to set aside the earlier order revoking his bail and the accompanying bench warrant issued for his arrest.
The court had, on June 16, revoked the bail previously granted to the activist and politician after he failed to appear for his scheduled trial.
Following his absence from proceedings, the court, acting on an oral application by counsel to the Department of State Services (DSS), Akinkolu Kehinde, SAN, also issued a bench warrant for his arrest.
At Monday’s sitting, Justice Umar dismissed an application filed by Sowore seeking the judge’s recusal from the case on the grounds of alleged bias, describing the request as unmeritorious.
The court subsequently adjourned the matter to June 24 for the hearing of the motion for stay of execution of the bail revocation order. The motion was filed by Sowore’s new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN, according to court proceedings.
Sowore, who is also a presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), arrived at the court premises earlier on Monday accompanied by supporters who carried placards in solidarity.
The DSS is prosecuting Sowore over allegations that he made false and defamatory statements against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following a social media post on his X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook accounts in which he allegedly described the President as “a criminal.”
