May 19, (THEWILL) — A Magistrate Court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Monday, sentenced 14 waste offenders to a two-week jail term with an option of fine.
The offenders who appeared before the court on a two-count charge are Kareem Sherifat, Isiwat Ololade, Ojanuga Esther Usman Babatunde, Blessing John, Falodun Bukola and Agunbiade Titilayo.
Others are Oritogun Samson, Obasa Idowu, Solomon Adelani, Lateef Saidat, Taiwo Abimbola, Adeniyi Olayinka and Precious Adeyeri.
The prosecutor, Sanitarian Abolaji Dasaolu, told the court that they were arrested around 8:00 a.m. at Tekobo, Idi-Aba, in the Abeokuta Magisterial District for illegally dumping refuse on a public road.
Dasaolu noted that the waste gave off a foul odour that drew flies and could contribute to the spread of cholera, posing a serious public health risk.
He explained that dumping waste on public roads and in drainage channels can obstruct public drains, increasing the risk of flooding and posing a serious threat to lives and property.
The prosecutor said that the offences are both contrary to the Public Health Law of Ogun State 2006 and Section 34(1) of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority Law 2020.
Delivering the judgement, Justice O. Sam-Obaleye convicted all the waste offenders on the two-count charge and imposed a sentence of fourteen days’ imprisonment or a fine of ₦10,000. She also charged them to be of goolld behaviour and stop dumping their waste on roads and public places, as any one of brought to the court for the same offence will be sentenced without the option of a fine.
