October 056, (THEWILL) — France’s lingering political crisis took a dramatic turn on Monday, as the new Prime Minister, Sébastien Lecornu, resigned less than a month after assuming office, throwing President Emmanuel Macron’s government into fresh uncertainty.
Lecornu tendered his resignation after a meeting with President Macron at the Élysée Palace in Paris. The resignation was confirmed in a brief statement issued by the presidency.
In a short address to reporters, Lecornu said he could not continue in office because “the conditions were not met” for him to effectively lead the government.
The 39-year-old was appointed on September 9, 2025, to replace François Bayrou, whose administration fell after a vote of no confidence. Lecornu’s government, formally unveiled on Sunday, immediately faced criticism from opposition parties for lacking fresh direction and for including many figures from the previous cabinet.
Reports say his government lasted only about 14 hours after its official announcement, making it one of the shortest in French history.
President Macron is expected to name a new prime minister in the coming days as he seeks to restore stability to his embattled administration.
Lecornu’s exit deepens the political instability that has gripped France since the 2024 snap parliamentary elections produced a hung National Assembly.
