March 31, (THEWILL) — The Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, has reinforced its corporate social responsibility (CSR) footprint with the commissioning of key infrastructure projects to improve livelihoods and strengthen socio-economic development in its host communities.
The interventions, comprising a modern market, solar-powered borehole, and electricity installations, were unveiled during the institution’s first quarter 2026 citizens and stakeholders’ engagement held on Monday.
Executed under the Academy’s 2025 CSR programme, the projects include seven lock-up shops and 19 open kiosks in Eyo-Abasi community, a 600-litre solar-powered borehole in Udung Okung, and a 10KVA solar power facility at the palace of the Paramount Ruler of Oron.
Management of the Academy said the initiatives underscore its commitment to responsible community partnership and align with the Federal Government’s marine and blue economy agenda.
Speaking at the event, the Acting Rector, Dr Kevin Okonna, described community engagement as a cornerstone for sustainable development and effective policy implementation.
He explained that the projects were strategically designed to address pressing needs: access to potable water, support for small-scale enterprises and provision of renewable energy.
Chairman of the Governing Council, Engr. Kehinde Olayinka Akinola, reiterated the institution’s resolve to maintain strong ties with its host communities, noting that peaceful coexistence remains vital to achieving its mandate.
He added that beyond its core responsibility of training maritime professionals, the Academy has consistently invested in people-oriented infrastructure, including previous interventions in electricity and street lighting.
In his remarks, the Paramount Ruler of Oron, Offong Odiong Akan, lauded the Academy for impactful CSR initiatives.
He noted that the new market would boost local commerce and job creation, while the borehole would enhance access to safe drinking water and sanitation.
The monarch further commended the adoption of solar energy solutions, describing them as a step toward sustainability and modernisation of community assets.
Stakeholders at the engagement described the projects as timely and significant, stressing that grassroots-focused CSR initiatives are essential for translating national development policies into real benefits for local populations.
The forum, themed “Leveraging Community Partnership for Effective Implementation of National Policy on Maritime and Blue Economy”, brought together government officials, traditional rulers, industry stakeholders and community leaders.
The Maritime Academy reaffirmed its commitment to sustained CSR interventions that foster economic growth, social stability and long-term development in its host communities.
