Dangote Refinery - Petrol price

December 22, (THEWILL) — Dangote Petroleum Refinery has commenced nationwide sales of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol, at a pump price of ₦739 per litre, beginning with outlets operated by MRS Oil Nigeria Plc across the country.

The move marks a major intervention in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum market, as Africa’s largest private refinery seeks to ease fuel costs for consumers and stabilise pump prices that have remained volatile in recent months.

According to the refinery, more than 2,000 MRS filling stations nationwide are expected to reflect the new price, extending the benefit beyond Lagos to other regions of the country.

The price adjustment follows earlier directives from the Dangote Group, including its founder Aliko Dangote, who had announced a reduction in the refinery’s gantry price to ₦699 per litre.

The strategy was designed to lower marketers’ acquisition costs and enable savings to be passed through to end users at the pump.

Early market response has been visible in parts of the Southwest, with long queues reported at several MRS stations in Lagos and Ogun states, as motorists gravitate toward outlets selling at the approved rate.

However, compliance remains uneven, with some filling stations including a few within the MRS network reportedly selling petrol at higher prices ranging between ₦850 and ₦900 per litre.

Dangote Refinery said it has ramped up distribution to meet rising demand, with daily gantry dispatches increasing to over 2,000 trucks per day following the price cut.

The company has urged marketers to fully comply with the new pricing structure and encouraged consumers to report outlets that fail to reflect the reduced price.

The nationwide rollout is expected to reduce fuel costs for households and transport-dependent businesses, intensify competitive pressure among fuel marketers, and reinforce the refinery’s growing influence on domestic fuel pricing as Nigeria transitions toward locally refined petroleum products.
