February 27, (THEWILL) – Impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, on Thursday, forcefully resumed at the legislative complex, insisting he remains the rightful leader of the state parliament.
THEWILL reports that Obasa arrived at the Assembly premises under heavy security presence, marking his first appearance since his ouster on January 13, 2025.
Ignoring his colleagues, who were in a deliberation session at the Assembly’s garden, he made a direct entry into the Speaker’s office.
His dramatic return coincided with reports of the withdrawal of security details attached to Mojisola Meranda, who was sworn in as the first female Speaker of the Lagos legislature following Obasa’s impeachment.
Obasa, who has consistently challenged the legitimacy of his removal, maintains that due process was not followed, describing his impeachment as unconstitutional.
Earlier, Meranda’s Special Adviser on Information, Victor Ganzallo, raised concerns over her security, warning that the Speaker is now “vulnerable and open to attack.”
Speaking to journalists at the Assembly complex, Obasa was resolute in his claim to leadership.
“I have resumed, and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly,” he declared.
When asked whether he had been reinstated, Obasa dismissed suggestions that he was ever lawfully removed.
“Impeachment or removal is a democratic and constitutional process, but it must follow due process. I am not against it, but if it is not done properly, then it is illegitimate,” he stated.
Meanwhile, lawmakers loyal to Meranda have rejected Obasa’s claims, maintaining that Meranda remains the Speaker of the Assembly.
