June 11 (THEWILL) — President Bola Tinubu will address Nigerians in a nationwide broadcast on Friday, as the country marks Democracy Day, the Presidency has announced.
The President’s Democracy Day address is scheduled to be transmitted at 7:00 a.m. through the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and Radio Nigeria.
A statement issued on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said all television and radio stations across the country have been requested to hook onto the NTA and Radio Nigeria networks to carry the broadcast live.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will deliver a national address on Friday, June 12, in commemoration of Democracy Day.
“The speech is scheduled to air on the network of Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and Radio Nigeria at 7:00 a.m.
“All television and radio stations are requested to hook onto the NTA and Radio Nigeria network to carry the broadcast”, the statement read.
The address forms part of activities lined up to commemorate Democracy Day, observed annually on June 12 to celebrate Nigeria’s democratic journey and honour the heroes of the country’s pro-democracy struggle.
Earlier, the Federal Government declared Friday, June 12, a public holiday to mark Democracy Day. Announcing the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government, the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, urged Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s democratic progress and recommit themselves to the values of unity, patriotism and nation-building.
Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to preserving democratic ideals and strengthening institutions that support good governance, accountability and citizens’ participation in the democratic process.
Democracy Day is celebrated in honour of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest poll. The election was won by the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, but was annulled by the military government, triggering years of political agitation and pro-democracy activism.
In recognition of the significance of the election and the sacrifices of those who fought for democracy, the Federal Government in 2018, officially moved the annual Democracy Day celebration from May 29 to June 12.
