A Deputy U.S. Marshal has been shot dead while serving an arrest warrant for a wanted fugitive in Alexandria, Louisiana, triggering a federal murder investigation.
The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) confirmed that the officer was killed on Monday during a joint law enforcement operation involving members of its Violent Offender Task Force and detectives from the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office.
According to the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred at about 3:00 p.m. in the Rutland Road area, where officers had gone to execute an arrest warrant on a wanted suspect.
The sheriff’s office said an officer-involved shooting erupted during the operation, resulting in the fatal shooting of the Deputy U.S. Marshal. Authorities did not immediately disclose the identity of the fallen officer pending notification of next of kin.
The U.S. Marshals Service confirmed that the wanted fugitive was taken into custody following the shooting.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has assumed responsibility for investigating the killing of the deputy marshal, while the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office is handling the broader investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
In a statement, the FBI’s New Orleans Field Office said it responded to the scene alongside the Alexandria Police Department, Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Louisiana State Police.
“The FBI responded to an incident this afternoon in Alexandria with the Alexandria Police Department, Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office, and Louisiana State Police”, the agency said.
The bureau added that the case remains an active and ongoing investigation, declining to release further details.
Tom Chittum, former Associate Deputy Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), said fugitive apprehension operations rank among the most hazardous assignments undertaken by law enforcement personnel.
“Fugitive operations are some of the most dangerous situations that law enforcement officers face because they are often pursuing people who know they are wanted, are on alert, and have already decided they are not going to be taken into custody without a fight. It is truly dangerous work”, Chittum said.
Authorities have not disclosed the identity of the suspect or the charges that prompted the arrest warrant.
