January 09, (THEWILL) – Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, on Wednesday, led members of the state executive council and chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party to condole with the family of the late Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Elizabeth Bidei.

Bidei passed away on December 30, 2024, at the age of 67, following a brief illness.

In a heartfelt tribute during the visit, Governor Diri recounted the unwavering support he received from Bidei and her husband, Jackson Bidei, a former African wrestling champion and retired Director of Sports.

He described her as a committed PDP member and a woman of valor who made significant contributions to the state’s development through her service in various capacities.

“Mrs. Bidei and her husband have stood by me from the onset of my political career. Their loyalty never wavered. It is heartbreaking to be here on a condolence visit,” Diri said in an emotional tone.

He added, “We cannot question God. This moment reminds us all of our mortality. Today, we mourn a compatriot, a dedicated party member, and an impactful public servant who contributed immensely to our state’s growth. Though we hoped for her continued service, God had other plans.

“On behalf of the government and people of Bayelsa, I extend our deepest condolences to the family. The government will take full responsibility for her funeral arrangements, as she passed while serving the state.”

Responding, family representatives, Mr. Ebikabowei Otobo and Mr. Jackson Bidei expressed gratitude to the governor for his compassionate leadership and personal visit.

Diri’s delegation included prominent state officials such as the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei; PDP Chairman, Chief Solomon Agwana; Chief of Staff, Government House, Dr. Peter Akpe; and the Head of Service, Mrs. Biobelemoye Charles-Onyema, among others.

The entourage also visited the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri, where survivors of last Friday’s tragic accident in Sagbama are receiving treatment.

The crash had claimed the life of the paramount ruler of the Ofoni community, HRH Auditor Onakpohor.

Diri assured the victims of the government’s commitment to their recovery and reiterated the need for enhanced road safety measures in the state.
