August 22, (THEWILL) — Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has urged Nigerian health institutions to embrace modern trends in medical science such as biomedical engineering and emergency medicine as part of efforts to curb brain drain in the sector.
The governor made the call on Thursday when the Ministerial Monitoring Committee of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) High-Impact Intervention in Medical Sciences paid him a courtesy visit at Government House, Yenagoa.
Represented by his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Diri described the country’s medical practice as largely traditional, stressing that better healthcare delivery could be achieved with the right political will and commitment from stakeholders.
He noted that integrating biomedical engineering and emergency medicine into medical institutions, alongside upgrading infrastructure, would discourage highly trained professionals from leaving the country for greener pastures.
Underscoring the priority his administration places on health and education, the governor said Bayelsa would continue to inject more resources into both sectors to improve the living standards of its people.
Diri also commended the Minister of Education and the Executive Secretary of TETFund for the agency’s intervention project at the Bayelsa Medical University (BMU), pledging the state’s readiness to collaborate on improving infrastructure across tertiary institutions.
