March 18, (THEWILL) — The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, on Wednesday, disbursed a total of ₦2.4 billion to beneficiaries and next of kin of 1,075 families of police officers who died in active service, clearing long-standing welfare backlogs.
The presentation of cheques, held in Abuja, was carried out under the Group Life Assurance Scheme and the I-G Family Welfare Schemes of the Nigeria Police Force.
Disu explained that the payments covered multiple policy years, including 2018/2019, 2020/2021, 2021/2022, 2022/2023, 2024/2025, and 2025/2026, adding that the disbursement also included recoveries from insurance obligations that had remained outstanding for several years.
He described the initiative as a critical step toward restoring confidence in the force’s welfare system, noting that the well-being of officers and their families remains a central pillar of his administration.
“A police institution that calls upon its personnel to make the highest sacrifices must equally demonstrate responsibility and compassion towards them and their families”, Disu stated.
He stressed that the ceremony went beyond financial compensation, serving as a solemn recognition of the courage, commitment, and ultimate sacrifices made by officers who served the nation with honour.
The IGP extended condolences to the widows, children, parents, and relatives of the fallen officers, acknowledging that no amount of compensation could fully replace the loss of loved ones.
According to him, the deceased were not just personnel of the force, but also fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters who played vital roles within their families and communities.
“Each day they wore the uniform, they did so with a profound sense of duty, placing the safety and security of others above their own. Their service and sacrifice will forever remain etched in the history of our force and in the memory of our nation”, he added.
Disu emphasised that the disbursement symbolises the enduring commitment of the police leadership to stand by the families of officers who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty, while also ensuring that welfare obligations are met promptly going forward.
