August 5, (THEWILL) — Arsenal have reached a breakthrough in their pursuit of Bruno Guimarães after agreeing a £75 million deal with Newcastle United for the Brazilian midfielder, ending one of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer.
The agreement comes after weeks of negotiations between the two Premier League clubs.
Arsenal initially approached Newcastle with a lower valuation, but both sides eventually settled on a compromise fee of £75 million to complete the transfer.
The move fulfills Guimarães’ long-standing ambition to join the North London club after he reportedly informed Newcastle in early July that he wanted to leave St James’ Park in search of a new challenge under Mikel Arteta.
The 28-year-old is now expected to undergo a medical before putting pen to paper on a long-term contract at the Emirates Stadium.
Guimarães had remained with Newcastle during their pre-season training camp in Spain while waiting for permission to finalize the transfer.
With an agreement now in place, the final formalities are expected to be completed swiftly.
The transfer will also benefit French club Lyon, where Guimarães made his name before moving to England. Lyon retained a 20 percent sell-on clause when they sold him to Newcastle, meaning they are expected to receive between £7 million and £8 million from the deal.
Since arriving at Newcastle, Guimarães has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most influential midfielders.
He made 153 league appearances for the Magpies, scoring 30 goals and providing 26 assists while playing a central role in the club’s rise into European football.
His performances last season further enhanced his reputation.
Across 41 appearances in all competitions, the Brazilian contributed nine goals and eight assists, while also representing Brazil at the FIFA World Cup, where he started all five matches and registered four assists.

His arrival is expected to see him partner England international Declan Rice, giving Arteta one of the strongest central midfield pairings in European football as the Gunners prepare to challenge for both the Premier League title and UEFA Champions League glory.
