Dozens Killed As Tanker Explodes In Niger

January 18, (THEWILL) – At least dozens of people are feared dead and several others were injured in a tanker explosion on Saturday morning, at Dikko Junction on the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway, in Gurara local government area of Niger State.

THEWILL gathered that the explosion occurred at about 9 a.m. as the crowd gathered to scoop fuel from the overturned tanker.

Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba-Arah, who confirmed the incident, said the explosion occurred in the process of transferring the PMS into another tanker. He said the petrol came into contact with a generator used to effect the transfer.

While over 50 people are feared dead and several others injured, Baba-Arah said properties worth millions of Naira were destroyed. He said the injured have been moved to the hospital for treatment.

Niger State governor, Mohammed Umar Bago, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, expressed worry over the recurring incident of tank explosions in the State.
