September 07, (THEWILL) – Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have arrested the former frontline negotiator of the Kaduna-Abuja train attack, Tukur Mamu.
The DSS picked him up from the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, upon his deportation from Egypt, where he was arrested by Interpol.
He was arrested by heavily armed operatives stationed at the entrance of the international wing of the Kano airport, at about 1:55 pm.
A statement by the DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, said Mamu was taken into custody on Wednesday, to answer questions relating to some security matters in the country.
“This is to confirm that Mamu, as a person of interest, was intercepted by Nigeria’s foreign partners at Cairo, Egypt, on 6th September 2022, while on his way to Saudi Arabia.
“He has since been returned to the country, today, 7th September 2022, and taken into the Service’s custody.
“The act followed a request by Nigeria’s Military, Law Enforcement, and Intelligence Community to their foreign partners to bring back Mamu to the country to answer critical questions on ongoing investigations relating to some security matters in parts of the country.
“The public may wish to note that the law will appropriately take its course”, the statement noted.
THEWILL had reported that Mamu was arrested in Cairo, the capital of Egypt over what is believed to be his involvement with the terrorists that abducted at least 62 passengers of an inbound Kaduna-Abuja train over five months ago.
Mamu, a Media Consultant to controversial Islamic Cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, had said he was flown back from Cairo by Interpol after he was interrogated.
Speaking earlier, Mamu said he left Nigeria Tuesday and after being investigated by the Egyptian security agencies, nothing incriminating was found in his possession.
He alleged a failed plot by the Nigerian government to detain him in another country just as was done to Sunday Igboho, adding that the Egyptian government found that his papers were genuine.
The publisher of the Desert Herald Newspaper in Kaduna was known to have kicked off a negotiation with the terrorists that abducted at least 62 passengers of an inbound Kaduna-Abuja train on March 28.
Although Mamu had reportedly backed out from negotiation following an alleged threat to his life by the Federal Government.
At least 46 victims of the incident have been released including a Pakistani, speculated to have paid a huge sum for his freedom, alongside others.
