September 07, (THEWILL) –Â Keira Walsh, an English midfielder, has been officially signed by Barcelona Femini, in a move to the Catalan giants from Manchester City for a female transfer record.
Walsh, who last summer won Euro 2022 and was included in the tournament team for her achievements with the Lionesses, has agreed to a three-year deal that will last until 2025, after completing the deal before the Spanish transfer deadline on Wednesday night.
The agreed fee, later reported in Spain to be £344,000, shatters the previous record set by Pernille Harder’s transfer from Wolfsburg to Chelsea in 2020.
Walsh took part in Tuesday’s 10-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Luxembourg for England. Considered one of the top central midfielders in the world, she has been a player of interest for Barcelona, who were eager to add her to their team as they try to improve and win back the Champions League title they lost to Lyon in last season’s final.
For the bulk of this season, the Catalans will be without their captain Alexia Putellas, and they have also lost their striker Jenni Hermoso to Pachuca in Mexico. But, defender Lucy Bronze, who left Manchester City this summer, will be with Walsh at her new team.
