March 08, (THEWILL) — The Vice Chancellor of David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS), Uburu, in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Professor Jesse Uneke, has reiterated that the violation of the University’s rules and regulations remains unforgiving.
Professor Uneke disclosed this during the 5th matriculation ceremony/open day for the 2025/2026 session, during which 1044 students were matriculated into the eight faculties of the university.
He hinted that between last matriculation and this one, the University Senate had approved disciplinary actions against twenty-nine (29) students.
According to the vice chancellor, just as the university does not spare any student who violates the university regulations, it also does not spare any lecturer who violates the university’s condition of service, even as he called on the students to take their studies very seriously.
He said, “Between the last matriculation and the present, the senate of the university approved disciplinary actions on a total of 29 students, depending on the magnitude of their offence and of these, three students were expelled due to examination misconduct and stealing.
“Ten students received a year suspension for smoking of illicit drugs, obscene and libellous publication, cyber bullying and stealing. Fourteen students received between one month and one semester suspension for bullying, assault and stealing. One student was withdrawn as a result of poor academic performance, and one student received a warning letter for misdemeanour”, he stated.
He explained that to get the best out of the students, DUFUHS takes out time to organise intensive orientation for new students and returning ones.
“Speaking to our students, we are taking time to take you through two weeks of intensive orientation about your conduct, about the rules and regulations of this university, about the need for you to be focused on what you came here for and we had some of our best professors including all the deans coming to teach you along with the principal officers and as well as your vice chancellor, we were all in the class during the orientation to teach you. I want to repeat once again that the university rules and regulations are unforgiving when they are violated.
He disclosed that some of the students were expelled a few weeks after they were admitted into the school, as he further advised the students not to allow the huge resources spent on them by their parents to go down the drain. “Last year, somebody did not last four weeks in this university, and we expelled the person. This year, somebody broke the record. The person did not last two weeks in this university, and we expelled the person.
“And so, students, please understand that your parents have invested so much to bring you to this place. Things are not very easy for parents, and they have made all the efforts that they can to make sure that you are in a university like this, and they are taking care of not only your fees, they’re also providing you with your sustenance money almost every month.
“Some of you, the money your parents are giving you is more than what some Nigerians are receiving as a monthly salary, in a month, and so I want to advise you, please take your studies very seriously and conduct yourself as sons and daughters of your parents who are coming from a very good home.
“We will do the best we can here to continue to guide you, to continue to train you, to continue to teach you, to become the best within your profession that you have enrolled at this university. But the ball is in your court. Your parents cannot come to write your exam for you. They will not come to the lecture for you. They will not do your assignments for you. They will not conduct themselves for you.
“You are the one who will do that, and we want to appeal to you to save your parents’ heartaches by making sure you behave well in this university. We don’t want parents coming here to kneel down and start crying and begging because that will not be acceptable in the university.
“Please take all the advice we’ve given you in the class and this one that I’m giving you now as the head of this institution, because when you violate them, the senate of the university will not in any way go back on making sure that the full sanction for any violation of the university regulation is given to the student concerned. So please, I am talking to you now in the presence of your parents so that you can learn to behave well and do your parents proud”, he admonished.
