November 10, (THEWILL) – Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, Minister of Works David Umahi, and the National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, Umar Damagum, honoured the life and legacy of the late Chief Onwe Joseph, former Chairman of the PDP in Ebonyi State.
The tribute was made during his burial at Amata village in Ntezi, Ishielu Local Government Area of the state.
Nwifuru, in his remarks, described Onwe as a selfless and liberal leader who dedicated much to the party and the state.
He advised Onwe’s children to set aside any grievances or rivalries that may have been associated with their father’s political journey, urging them to embrace unity and forgiveness.
“It gladdens my heart to be here, but with mixed feelings.
“Our brother is here watching over us, yet we can’t see him. The legacy he left behind is what brings us all here today. Chief Onwe was a liberal man who made sacrifices for the good of our party and state,” Nwifuru said.
He added, “When I served as an ex-officio member in the PDP, Chief Onwe was always trusted with responsibilities.
“He was dependable, always ready to approve proposals that served the common good. He stood by us through many challenges and devoted himself to our shared cause.”
Reflecting on Onwe’s contribution, Minister of Works David Umahi shared his admiration for the late chairman’s unwavering loyalty and sacrifices, even when political tides shifted.
“Onwe Joseph was not one to switch sides for convenience. Even as we left PDP to pursue our destiny, he chose to stay.
“He went above and beyond, often working behind the scenes and staying by our side through tough times. I appreciate the Governor for honoring his memory, and I trust that God will reward his sacrifices,” Nwifuru stated.
Umahi recounted the intense political period of 2015, noting how Onwe and other leaders worked tirelessly to support the party.
“In those days, we ran from one place to another, gathering critical information. Chief Onwe never wavered; he stood with us.”
Similarly, Umar Damagum, represented by PDP National Vice Chairman for the South East zone, Ali Odefa, commended Nwifuru for embracing an inclusive approach to leadership and fostering peace in Ebonyi.
He urged the people of the state to prioritise unity over politics, emphasising that Chief Onwe’s life serves as a reminder of shared identity and purpose.
“The life of our brother, lying here, is a profound lesson for all of us.
“Chief Onwe was a team player, peaceful, and naturally intelligent. He lived and died as a man of peace. Let’s remember that we are Ebonyi people first, above any political affiliation,” Odesa said.
He conveyed warm regards from the PDP National Chairman and called on the Governor and Minister to continue supporting Onwe’s family, recognizing the importance of remembering those who devoted themselves to the state.
