May 13, (THEWILL) — Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Mustapha Abdullahi, in Abuja, over an alleged money laundering investigation involving more than ₦500 billion.
Sources familiar with the development disclosed that the Energy Commission boss is currently being detained at the headquarters of the anti-graft agency, where he is undergoing interrogation by EFCC investigators.
According to a highly placed source, the arrest, which reportedly took place on Wednesday, forms part of a wider investigation into alleged financial crimes connected to the operations of the commission.
The development comes on the heels of the conviction of former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, over a ₦33.8 billion fraud case, further drawing public attention to allegations of corruption and financial misconduct within Nigeria’s power and energy sector.
Although details of the alleged transactions being investigated are still sketchy as of press time, sources indicated that EFCC operatives are examining financial records and other documents connected to the activities of the Energy Commission of Nigeria.
Attempts to obtain official confirmation from the EFCC were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
The spokesperson for the commission, Dele Oyewale, was unavailable for comment when contacted.
