June 18, (THEWILL) – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Moses Sule, alongside 14 former lawmakers over alleged involvement in a N2.5 billion money laundering and procurement fraud.
According to a statement released by the commission on Wednesday, the arrests were carried out by operatives of its Makurdi Zonal Directorate on Tuesday, following petitions from concerned citizens of Plateau State.
The EFCC said the arrests were linked to alleged violations of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, and abuse of the public procurement process during the lawmakers’ six-month tenure in office.
Those arrested alongside Sule include: Gwottson Fom, Sani Abubakar, Jwe Philip Gwom, Thomas Dantong, Happiness Mathew Akawu, Cornelius Dotyok, Agbalak Ibrahim, Danjuma Azi, Fwangje Bala Ndat, Salome Tanimu Wanglet, Namba Rimuyat, Nimchak Rims, Ishaku Maren, and Paul Datugun.
The EFCC stated that during their brief time in office, the state government procured several luxury vehicles for the lawmakers at an estimated cost of N2.5 billion.
However, upon leaving office, the lawmakers allegedly failed to return the vehicles, despite repeated efforts by the government.
“The state government had to procure another set of vehicles for the current members of the House of Assembly, valued at about N2 billion,” the statement added.
The anti-graft agency confirmed that investigations are still ongoing and the suspects will be arraigned in court once the process is completed.
