October 10, (THEWILL) — Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, is expected to formally defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.
The development was disclosed on Friday by the APC national leadership during the swearing-in of the newly inaugurated Enugu State executive committee, led by former state chairman, Dr. Ben Nwoye, at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.
According to party sources, the defection ceremony will hold in Enugu, the state capital, and will be attended by top national and state leaders of the APC.
Ahead of the event, the APC National Working Committee (NWC) recently dissolved the party’s previous state executive and appointed a seven-member caretaker committee, chaired by Nwoye, to oversee preparations for the governor’s formal reception.
Speaking at the inauguration, APC National Chairman, Dr. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, and Deputy National Chairman (South), Emma Enukwu, confirmed that the party had made significant efforts to facilitate Mbah’s defection.
Nwoye, in his remarks, said the governor would join the APC alongside several political appointees, elected officials, and supporters from all 17 local government areas of the state.
Party insiders described Mbah’s defection as part of a broader political realignment in the South-East ahead of the 2027 general elections.
If completed, the move would make him the first sitting governor from the region to join the ruling APC since the 2023 polls.
The defection marks a major political shift in Enugu, where the PDP has remained dominant since 1999.
While some APC members in Enugu have welcomed the move as a boost to the party’s strength and visibility, others have expressed concerns over potential internal disputes that could arise from Mbah’s entry into the party, a source told THEWILL on Friday.
