Sector Performance:
Performance across key sectors was largely negative. The banking index closed lower, pressured by losses in Stanbic IBTC and Fidelity Bank, while the consumer goods sector extended its decline following selloffs in Cadbury, International Breweries, and Champion Breweries.
Conversely, the oil and gas index recorded a mild rebound driven by strong gains in Oando Plc, while the insurance index posted marginal improvement, supported by positive movements in AIICO and Sovereign Trust Insurance. The industrial goods sector traded flat, with Dangote Cement and BUA Cement remaining unchanged.
Investor Sentiment, Market Outlook:
Investor mood remained cautious as the market struggled to sustain upward momentum amid mixed corporate earnings and tighter liquidity in the fixed-income space. The day’s negative breadth underscores growing short-term profit-taking across mid- and large-cap counters.
Analysts expect sentiment to remain subdued going into Friday’s session, with market direction likely shaped by renewed interest in dividend-paying stocks and oil & gas majors, alongside upcoming fiscal and monetary policy signals.
