February 02, (THEWILL) — Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has approached the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to vacate an interim order directing the seizure of 57 properties linked to him, citing legitimate sources of income that total over ₦11.9 billion.
The disclosure was made through his lawyer, Joseph Daudu, in a motion on notice filed on his behalf. The motion specifically seeks the release of three of the seized properties, arguing that the interim order was unnecessary given the documented sources of his wealth.
According to the motion, Malami had fully declared his income in asset declarations filed with the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB). His earnings include ₦374,630,900 from salaries, estacodes, severance allowances, and other entitlements. He also reported ₦574,073,000 generated from disposed assets and a turnover of ₦10,017,382,684 from his private business ventures. In addition, Malami provided ₦2,522,000,000 in loans extended to his businesses, and he received ₦958,000,000 as traditional gifts from personal friends.
The motion further noted that the former AGF earned N509,880,000 from the proceeds of his book launch and public presentation titled “Contemporary Issues on Nigerian Law and Practice, Thorny Terrains in Traversing the Nigerian Justice Sector: My Travails and Triumphs.”
It argued that these disclosures demonstrate the legitimacy of Malami’s wealth and urged the court to lift the interim order to allow him access to the three properties.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had earlier seized the 57 properties linked to the former AGF, prompting legal action from Malami’s team. The Federal High Court is yet to rule on the motion.
