March 09, (THEWILL) — Former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami (SAN), returned home on Monday after spending over three months in remand, following the fulfilment of bail conditions in his ongoing ₦9 billion money laundering trial.
Last Friday, the Federal High Court in Abuja granted bail to Malami, his wife, Asabe Bashir, and their son, Abdulaziz Malami, for ₦200 million each. The bail was accompanied by the requirement of two sureties in like sum, as part of the conditions set for their release in the 16-count charge brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The presiding judge, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, also directed the defendants to deposit their international passports with the court. With all conditions met, Malami was released and returned to his residence, where some of his supporters had gathered to welcome him.
Video footage shared on X (formerly Twitter) showed the moment the ex-AGF arrived at his home, drawing a crowd of well-wishers and supporters.
Malami is scheduled to appear before the court again on March 16, 2026, the resumption of his trial. The EFCC accused him and his family members of laundering ₦9 billion, a case that has attracted significant national attention due to Malami’s former position as the nation’s chief law officer.
