May 22, (THEWILL) – The former Minister of Information, and leader of Timbuktoo Media Services (TMS), Mr Labaran Maku, has challenged media practitioners to place priority on reporting development strides an administration has posted rather than the political class.
According to him, focus on the provision of roads, hospitals, boreholes as well as what affects the downtrodden in the society, should be given prominence in the media.
Mr Maku, who threw the challenge while addressing media practitioners at the Government House, Makurdi, on Thursday, explained that TMS is in Benue State in order to showcase the record of achievements the governor Hyacinth Alia administration was able to post on ground in the past two years in office.
According to him, democracy in the country is not working as it should; however noted that significant achievements have been made in the past twenty-six years, listing universities, roads, water projects and communication as some of the sectors that gained significant improvement.
He said democracy is better no matter what, and called on journalists to always focus their reports on social interventions such as training of youths, women empowerment, skills acquisition and other technical services which will enable people to be self-reliant.
In his remarks, the former Director General, National Orientation Agency (NOA), Dr Mike Omeri, said the team will tour the entire Benue State to ascertain that the Alia administration actually carried out projects in the past two years in office that are of value to the people of the state.
He said that at the end of the tour, which will start on Saturday and end on Tuesday, a town hall meeting will be held on Wednesday with stakeholders to air their views about the administration.
