June 23, (THEWILL) – Social media activist, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), on Monday led a group of schoolchildren in a protest in Abuja over the prolonged strike by primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
THEWILL reports that members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the FCT have been on strike since March over the non-payment of the N70,000 minimum wage.
Amid the stalemate, VDM mobilised a group of affected pupils who converged at the entrance gate of the FCT Minister’s office to demand government intervention.
Declaring the Minister’s gate as a temporary classroom, VDM held an open class where he taught the children letters of the alphabet.
“S for Suegbe, T for Tinubu, W for Wike,” the pupils chanted during the lesson led by the influencer.
He also provided rice and chicken for the children during a break session, in a symbolic gesture aimed at drawing attention to the plight of students affected by the ongoing strike.
The protest comes amid growing concerns over the impact of the teachers’ strike on basic education in the nation’s capital.
