January 23, (THEWILL) – The Federal Government, through the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, has granted a license to establish a 10,000 bpd modular refinery in Imode, Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State.
The license, issued to MRO Energy Limited, an indigenous energy company, marks a significant step toward boosting Nigeria’s domestic refining capacity and reducing reliance on imported petroleum products.
The NMDPRA announced the development via its official social media platforms, highlighting the refinery’s potential to drive economic growth and enhance energy security.
According to NMDPRA, the refinery will produce high-quality petroleum products, including Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), Automotive Gas Oil (diesel), Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Marine Diesel Oil, and Bunker Fuel Oil.
It is designed to meet Euro 5 product specifications, in line with global environmental standards and Nigeria’s commitment to cleaner energy solutions.
The project has been lauded by industry stakeholders, who have underscored its potential to create jobs, promote local content, and stimulate economic activities in host communities.
The refinery is also expected to strengthen the downstream sector and support Nigeria’s broader strategy of bridging the gap between the local demand and supply of refined petroleum products.
The approval is part of the Federal Government’s push to attract private sector investment in the energy industry and advance the modular refinery initiative.
This initiative aims to decentralize refining operations, increase efficiency, and foster economic inclusivity across Nigeria.
