December 15, (THEWILL) — The Federal Government has announced a nationwide ban on the admission and transfer of students into Senior Secondary School Three (SS3) in both public and private secondary schools, as part of measures to curb examination malpractice.
The directive, issued by the Federal Ministry of Education, takes effect from the 2026/2027 academic session and restricts all admissions and transfers strictly to Senior Secondary School One (SS1) and Senior Secondary School Two (SS2).
A statement signed on Sunday by the Director, Press and Public Relations of the Federal Ministry of Education, Boriowo Folasade, explained that the decision was informed by rising concerns over examination malpractices, particularly the use of so-called “special centres” during external examinations, which have continued to undermine the integrity and credibility of Nigeria’s education system.
According to the Ministry, the practice of moving students into SS3 shortly before external examinations has been widely exploited to gain unfair advantages, thereby compromising academic standards.
“With effect from the next academic calendar, admission or transfer into SS3 will no longer be permitted under any circumstance”, the statement said.
The Ministry noted that the policy is designed to discourage last-minute movement of students for examination-related benefits, ensure proper academic monitoring, and promote continuity in teaching and learning throughout the senior secondary school cycle.
School proprietors, principals, and administrators across the country have been directed to comply fully with the new policy, with the warning that any violation will attract appropriate sanctions in line with existing education laws, regulations, and guidelines.
Reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to quality education, the Ministry said the measure is part of broader efforts to maintain academic standards, promote fairness, and restore public confidence in the conduct of examinations nationwide.
