March 31, (THEWILL) — No fewer than 9.2 million Nigerians have benefited from the Federal Government’s Household Prosperity and Empowerment Cash Transfer (HOPE-CT) Programme, with about N688 billion disbursed over two years.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Bernard Doro, disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja, noting that the initiative is designed to cushion the effects of recent economic reforms on vulnerable households.
Anchored on the National Social Register, the scheme is being implemented in collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission and other agencies to ensure transparency and accountability.
Doro said the programme serves as a shock-response mechanism for low-income Nigerians, with each eligible household receiving N75,000 in three tranches.
According to him, 9,178,837 households have received the first tranche of N25,000, while 7.2 million and 6.5 million beneficiaries have received the second and third tranches respectively, as disbursement continues nationwide.
Providing a demographic breakdown, he said 5,391,225 beneficiaries representing 58.7 percent are women, while 3,787,612, or 41.3 percent, are men.
The intervention, which runs from November 2023 to February 2026, requires beneficiaries to be verified using a National Identification Number or Bank Verification Number.
The NIMC Director-General, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, said identity verification has strengthened transparency in the programme.
