August 21, (THEWILL) — The Ebonyi State Government says it is working with the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals and security agencies to investigate the cause of a mining pit collapse at Ishiagu, in Ivo Local Government Area of the state.
The Commissioner for Solid Minerals, Chidi Onyia Emmanuel, disclosed this on Wednesday when he led an inspection team comprising federal mines officers and security personnel to the site.
He dismissed media reports that the location had been handed over to illegal miners, stressing that Greenfield Metals, which operates the pit, holds a valid mining licence.
Emmanuel explained that preliminary findings suggested the incident may have been caused by a natural occurrence, not negligence.
“It is quite unfortunate that this incident claimed the lives of two of our people working in the pit. We commiserate with their families and those who sustained injuries.
“As a government, our primary responsibility is to protect lives and the livelihoods of our citizens,” he said.
The commissioner added that the outcome of the investigation would guide future safety measures for mining investors in the state.
“This is a collaborative effort between the federal and state ministries.
“At the end of our findings, we will advise miners and investors where necessary. If recklessness is established, we will act accordingly. But if it is confirmed to be a natural disaster, we may have no choice but to accept it as such,” he explained.
Emmanuel emphasised that mining, like many industries worldwide, comes with hazards, but assured that the probe would be thorough and transparent, involving the police, DSS, and Civil Defence.
He also cautioned against misleading reports, insisting that Ebonyi State does not condone illegal mining and fully recognises licences issued by the federal government.
