November 05, (THEWILL) — The Federal Government has officially handed over 100 newly built, energy-efficient homes to widows in Rigachikun, Kaduna State, marking a major milestone in its social housing initiative under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
A statement released on Wednesday by the State House said the initiative, implemented through Family Homes Funds Limited (FHFL), delivers two-bedroom bungalows equipped with solar power systems and integrated urban farming spaces to support livelihood and food production. Each beneficiary also received training in climate-smart agriculture and small-scale food processing to boost income sustainability.
Speaking during the handover, Chairman of FHFL, Mr Ademola Adebise, said the project is a demonstration of community initiative supported by responsive governance. He explained that the widows pooled land and approached the Federal Government through FHFL, leading to the construction of the housing scheme. According to him, the homes represent restored hope, dignity and a sustainable future for vulnerable women.
“These homes represent far more than physical structures. They symbolise renewed hope and restored dignity, particularly for the 100 resilient women empowered through this initiative”, Adebise said. He added that the development showcases a new social housing model that blends home ownership with skills training, livelihood support and climate-smart construction.
The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, described the Rigachikun project as a direct reflection of President Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring inclusive growth reaches every Nigerian household. He noted that government expenditure must translate into tangible improvements in citizens’ lives, especially in housing, employment and dignity.
Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, praised the widows for taking initiative and commended FHFL and the Federal Government for supporting a people-driven idea. He said Kaduna is proud to host the first-of-its-kind energy-efficient social housing community for widows in Nigeria, stressing that no vulnerable group will be left behind in the state’s development plan.
The Managing Director of FHFL, Mr Abdulmutallib Mukhtar, said the project demonstrates the power of collaboration and innovation in solving housing challenges. He noted that the success of the initiative reinforces the need for community-government partnerships to drive measurable development impact nationwide.
Constructed using Expanded Polystyrene System (EPS) technology, the homes offer up to 40 percent savings in energy use and construction costs. The technology also reduces carbon emissions, making the housing development both affordable and climate-friendly. Each unit comes with solar electricity, a cottage farming yard and food processing facilities to improve food security and income diversification for beneficiaries.
Over 500 direct and indirect jobs were created during the construction phase, contributing to youth and women’s empowerment in the community. Officials say the project has transformed policy into progress and progress into opportunity for vulnerable families and the wider society.
The Rigachikun housing scheme forms part of a broader national effort to expand affordable housing access for low-income Nigerians while promoting sustainable development and inclusive prosperity across the country.
