July 14, (THEWILL) — The Federal Government has postponed the special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session earlier scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in honour of late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
President Bola Tinubu had initially slated the emergency FEC meeting to pay tribute to his predecessor for his “invaluable contributions to Nigeria’s unity, stability, and progress.”
However, a statement issued on Monday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the session was postponed in light of the state funeral scheduled for Tuesday in Daura, Katsina State.
According to the statement, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) will announce a new date for the special session after the funeral proceedings.
“The remains of the former Nigerian leader will arrive from London tomorrow, Tuesday, by noon, and will be committed to earth in his hometown, Daura, by 2 p.m. in accordance with Islamic rites,” Onanuga said.
Former President Buhari died on Sunday afternoon at a clinic in London after a prolonged illness. He was aged 82.
Following his death, President Tinubu declared a seven-day period of national mourning, during which flags are to fly at half-mast across the country.
Tinubu also dispatched Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila to London to condole with the Buhari family and coordinate the repatriation of his remains.
In addition, the Federal Government declared Tuesday, July 15, a public holiday to honour the memory and legacy of the former military ruler and two-term civilian president.
