May 26 (THEWILL) — The Federal Government has reaffirmed its determination to strengthen Nigeria’s internal security framework, charging the newly inaugurated Board of Trustees of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund to deliver measurable results in support of policing operations across the country.
Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam, gave the charge during the inauguration ceremony of the Board held on Monday at the Ministry of Police Affairs in Abuja.
Gaidam said the Federal Government remained committed to strengthening the nation’s internal security architecture and enhancing the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force through sustained institutional support, strategic reforms, and improved funding mechanisms.
Describing the inauguration as a major step in the ongoing efforts to reposition the police in line with global best practices, the minister noted that the Nigeria Police Trust Fund was created as a strategic intervention platform to provide sustainable funding for police training, welfare, operational logistics, equipment, and infrastructure development.
According to him, the Fund has continued to play a critical role in supporting policing operations and improving the effectiveness of the Nigeria Police Force in maintaining law and order nationwide.
Gaidam stressed that security remains the foundation for national development, warning that no nation can achieve sustainable economic growth, social stability, or democratic advancement without a secure environment. He therefore urged stakeholders to sustain support for initiatives aimed at improving the professionalism, efficiency, and operational capability of the police.
Charging members of the newly inaugurated Board to discharge their duties with integrity, transparency, and accountability, the minister said Nigerians expect improved policing, enhanced security response, and prudent management of resources allocated to the Fund.
“The inauguration of this Board of Trustees is not merely ceremonial; it is a call to national service. Nigerians expect sound policy direction, institutional accountability, and measurable results in the management of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund,” he stated.
He further assured that the Ministry of Police Affairs would continue to provide policy guidance and oversight to ensure the effective realization of the objectives of the Fund in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Anuma Ogbonnaya, said the evolving security landscape requires innovative approaches, effective collaboration, and sustained investment in policing institutions.
Ogbonnaya noted that the inauguration of the Board came at a critical period as the nation consolidates ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening the operational effectiveness of the Nigeria Police Force.
He expressed confidence in the capacity and integrity of the Board members to provide strategic leadership for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, while reaffirming the ministry’s commitment to providing the necessary coordination and institutional support required for the successful implementation of the Fund’s mandate.
In his vote of thanks, the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mohammed Sheidu, appreciated the Minister, the Inspector-General of Police, and other stakeholders for supporting the successful inauguration ceremony.
Sheidu described the inauguration as another significant step toward strengthening police education, leadership, professionalism, and institutional development in Nigeria.
The event was attended by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu; Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Hashimu Argungu; Commandant of the Nigeria Police Academy, Patrick Adedeji Atayero; members of the Board of Trustees, representatives of security agencies, development partners, and other stakeholders.
