May 04, (THEWILL) — The Federal Government has called for greater protection for Nigerians living in South Africa, urging authorities to strengthen security measures and ensure the safety of foreign nationals amid rising concerns over recent incidents.
This move comes in the wake of the deaths of two Nigerians, Amaramiro Emmanuel and Ekpenyong Andrew, who reportedly died in the custody of South African security agents on April 21, 2026. The development has prompted Nigeria to engage South African authorities at the highest diplomatic levels, with a focus on ensuring accountability and preventing future occurrences.
Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, revealed that the Permanent Secretary, Dunoma Ahmed, met with South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner to Nigeria, Lesoli Machele, to formally communicate Nigeria’s concerns and expectations.
Central to Nigeria’s position is its call for a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident. The Federal Government has requested the release of autopsy reports, case files, and all relevant documentation to its diplomatic missions in Pretoria and Johannesburg. It also stressed the importance of granting full access to the victims’ families, reinforcing its commitment to justice, transparency, and due process.
Beyond the immediate case, Abuja expressed concern over growing tensions linked to certain groups and individuals accused of targeting foreign nationals. It urged South African authorities to take proactive measures to curb incitement, prevent intimidation, and strengthen internal security mechanisms to safeguard all residents regardless of nationality.
Nigeria, however, welcomed recent assurances from South African leaders, including the President, Police Minister, and Police Commissioner, who have publicly condemned extrajudicial actions and attacks on foreign-owned businesses.
The Federal Government noted that such commitments are encouraging and should be matched with concrete actions to ensure effective protection and impartial law enforcement.
In a significant step forward, both countries have agreed to activate the Early Warning Mechanism Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed last Friday.
The initiative is designed to facilitate rapid information-sharing on emerging threats, enabling timely interventions to protect nationals in both countries.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its readiness to sustain collaboration with South African authorities, expressing optimism that ongoing efforts will lead to improved security, justice, and mutual trust between both nations.
