October 10, (THEWILL) — The Federal Government has launched the National Digital Trustmark (NDTM), a new framework designed to authenticate online businesses, protect consumers, and curb the rising cases of e-commerce fraud across Nigeria.

The initiative, developed by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, is part of efforts to strengthen trust, transparency, and accountability in Nigeria’s fast-growing digital economy.

Speaking at the launch in Abuja, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, described the Digital Trustmark as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s digital governance journey.

According to him, the initiative will serve as an official verification seal for legitimate online businesses and service providers, helping consumers identify credible platforms with confidence.

Tijani said, “The introduction of the Digital Trustmark demonstrates our commitment to building a safe, reliable, and inclusive digital environment.

“By setting clear verification standards, we are promoting fair business practices, reducing online scams, and boosting confidence in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.”

NITDA Outlines Compliance and Certification Process

Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, explained that the Trustmark would be issued to online businesses that comply with data protection, cybersecurity, and service quality requirements defined by the agency.

Qualified businesses will be allowed to display the Digital Trustmark seal on their websites and e-commerce platforms, indicating that their operations meet national benchmarks for safety and reliability.

“The Trustmark will not only function as a verification tool but also as a mechanism for promoting transparency, strengthening consumer protection, and enhancing accountability in the digital economy,” Abdullahi said.

He noted that the initiative aligns with the government’s goal of positioning Nigeria as a competitive hub for digital trade and innovation, while also supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to thrive within a regulated, secure online space.

Boosting Confidence in Digital Transactions

Nigeria’s e-commerce sector has grown rapidly in recent years, driven by smartphone adoption, digital payment expansion, and online marketplaces.

However, this growth has been accompanied by an increase in cybercrime, fake listings, and consumer distrust — challenges the Digital Trustmark aims to mitigate.

The framework complements existing regulatory measures, including the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) and the National Cybersecurity Policy, to create a unified and safer digital environment.

By validating legitimate businesses and reinforcing consumer confidence, the Federal Government hopes the Digital Trustmark will attract greater private sector investment, strengthen digital inclusion, and position Nigeria as a regional leader in trusted online commerce.
