March 26, (THEWILL) – A hunter, Taiwo Bolugbe, mistakenly shot himself when he and five hunters went on a hunting expedition at Ajinawo, in the Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The victim’s dane gun was said to have slipped from his shoulder while trying to retrieve a hunted animal, before it accidentally discharged and shot him at the lower jaw.
Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed this to newsmen in a statement in Abeokuta on Tuesday.
Odutola said that the police received a report at about 4:30 pm on March 23, 2025, that a hunting trip had turned fatal when the victim was accidentally shot.
She said efforts by the five hunters to save his life proved abortive as he succumbed to his injuries.
The PRO said that the five hunters who went on the hunting expedition with the deceased have all been arrested, and the police have launched an investigation into the incident.
“The Ogun State Police Command has launched an investigation into the tragic shooting incident that claimed the life of a hunter during a group hunting expedition at Ajinawo area, Yewa North Local Government, Ogun State.
“At about 16:30hrs on March 23, 2025, the police received a report that a hunting trip had turned fatal when a hunter, Taiwo Bolugbe ‘m’, was accidentally shot. Five hunters were arrested in connection with the incident”, Odutola noted.
The case has, therefore, been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation. The Police Command urges the public to exercise caution while handling firearms, even in hunting activities, to prevent tragic incidents.
