March 24, (THEWILL) – The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed the rearrest of five out of the 12 inmates who escaped during a jailbreak at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton Karfe, Kogi State.
Spokesperson for the Service, DCC Abubakar Umar, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, noting that efforts were ongoing to recapture the remaining escapees.
THEWILL earlier reported that an officer of the correctional service was killed during the attack, which occurred in the early hours of Monday.
The statement read, “Upon receiving reports of the attack, the Acting Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, in collaboration with heads of sister security agencies and the SSA to the Governor of Kogi State, immediately mobilized to the facility. Security personnel were deployed to restore order and launch a manhunt for the escapees.
“So far, five of the fleeing inmates have been recaptured, while efforts continue to apprehend the rest and bring them to justice.”
Meanwhile, Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has directed the Acting Controller General to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the jailbreak. He also ordered a nationwide security audit of correctional facilities to prevent future incidents.
The NCoS urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing any useful information that could aid in recapturing the remaining escapees. Citizens were also encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the nearest security authorities.
